Belladonna, or deadly nightshade Poisonous
plant Atropa belladonna, found in Europe and
Asia. The dried powdered leaves contain
alkaloids. Belladonna extract acts
medicinally as an anticholinergic, and is
highly toxic in large doses. Belladonna is of
the nightshade family, Solanaceae. It grows
to 5 ft/1.5 m, with dull green leaves to 8
in/20 cm and solitary greenish flowers that
produce deadly black berries. The alkaloids
contained are hyoscyamine, atropine,
hyoscine, and belladonnine.
